Deer Hollow Pass:

PlywoodBefore PlywoodAfter

Before (left image), water was flowing right down the middle of the trail from Chickadee Creek because Moose Creek Trails is the path of least resistance for the water. Over time, the flow of water created a gully that posed a challenge for skiing and mountain biking. A standard piece of 3/4" x 4' x 8' plywood from Lowe's, (right image) was installed to eliminate the water spot and graded base gravel mixture from New Hampshire Rocks was used to fill in the gully to provide a smooth trail surface. The plywood allows water from the right side of the trail to drain diagonally across and downhill away from Deer Hollow pass. Four large rocks where placed on the edges of the plywood to keep it in place and provide stability.

GravelBefore GravelAfter

Before (left image), the trail was very rough and bumpy and not usable for a hard tail or regular mountain bike. The trail was often muddy and bad bare spots after a measurable snowstorm. After (right image), graded base gravel mixture from New Hampshire Rocks was used to fill in the rough and muddy spots creating a smooth and wider trail surface for mountain bikes and skis.

SmallCulvert LargeCulvert

Before (left image), a culvert was installed to divert water from Chickadee Creek away from the trail to prevent erosion. Initially, the small culvert worked and would get clogged with leaves and other debris after a rainstorm or in the Spring from the snow melt. After (right image), a larger diameter culvert was installed so leaves and other debris would not clog the culvert causing water to back up onto the trail. However, the leaves that collect near the ends of the culvert are cleaned out on a regular basis to prevent major erosion of the trail.

MudBefore NoMud

The intersection with Moonlight Path was very muddy (left image) and difficult to make the turn on a mountain bike. A graded base gravel mixture from the Balcom Brothers Inc. was used to eliminate the mud and improve the intersection (right image). Filling in this part of the trail also eliminated stagnant, standing water.
